Matamata Panelworks Open day 2012 gave a great display of cars despite a few drops of rain,
“we would never let it spoil a great day out”.
The day started off with light rain falling but eventually cleared to a beautiful morning and hot afternoon. Over 700 people passed through their doors. The local Primary school benefitted by over $2000 in donations and other purchases.
Malcolm and his team had set out the main workshop with current builds and past Powercruise winners, which showed how the shop performs its work with cars in various stages of build. There were Mustangs with fantastic metalwork and others awaiting panels showing the adoring public how well the team can do the subtle alterations that make the cars look so great, and those wilder alterations that make people go, “how did they do that”.
Past builds were also there to support the shop. The Roush Mustang and the menacing XB Falcon, both which have been featured in NZV8 and both whom have taken overall best car at the Powercruise in Taupo. A wonderful GT40 graced the paintshop across the road where PPG and Autolink reps were available to offer colour advice and assistance for any questions. Malcolm’s paintshop is setting a very high bench mark for paint jobs with these cars. People viewing the cars were certainly getting their moneys worth and were appreciating the quality of work.
Support businesses were also around to offer advice on products for those wanting to restore their own vehicles. Repco was out in force with spot prizes every hour, for vehicles that were visiting.
When 2.00pm rolled around, the public were still coming in and Malcolm and his team enjoyed the chatting to people, the doors were still open to 4.00pm. A southern car club with 9 cars, rolled up the following day for a look. Just a sign of the commitment by people that this shop is becoming well known for.
With this year over we now have to wait till the next time this shop opens its doors. So keep an eye on those car magazines, as I am sure you’ll see more builds hitting the pages over the coming months.
We would like to mention a special thankyou to Colin Reed for helping us out with the cars and for the great support and turnout from the Waikato Mustang and Bay of Plenty Mustang Club, for fronting up on the day despite the morning weather.

On arrival at Malcolm and Nicky’s, it was still drizzling, so we parked up and had a wander around. Malcolm had some great looking cars set up to look over. A Mk2 Zephyr being restored caught my eye as did a fastback. This will be a rocketship when its finished.
As the photos testify there was plenty to look at and admire. The ladies behind the BBQ and drinks counter were working flat tack all day and they did a great job keeping everyone fed. Great tasting food at very good prices.
Thanks very much Malcolm, Nicky, Jo and the team for all your organising for the day.

Panelworks Open Day 2014 is going to be even more amazing because every time it is held it is bigger and better than the last one …
Our first Open Day in 2005 started with just a handful of people building each time to just over 1000 in 2010. Open Day 2012 has now been and gone and we had over 700 people. Plan now to come and see some incredible car restorations and talk cars all day for 2014!
